Frequently Asked Questions

WhitewaterWhat is kayaking?

Kayaking is the use of a kayak for moving across water. This can be you local lake or a big waterfall. Basically a really fun watersport.

Will I get wet?

Frankly YES! It is a water sport after all.

When do you meet?

Polo: TBC

Pool sessions:    Tuesday 9pm – 10pm & Thursday 8pm – 10pm (University Pool)

HPP (White water course): Most Wednesday afternoons

Do I need loads of fancy kit?

No. The club has all the kit you need to start your kayaking career. Once you discover what paddling you wish to do by all means feel free to buy your own kit and be as fancy as you like. You will however need swimming kit, a towel and we do suggest a thermal top.

A Crazy PersonDo I need to be really good to join?

Definitely not. The club has something to offer everyone from total beginner to Olympian.  The club offers coaching to help beginners and intermediates progress their skills and enjoy the sport.

What is Freshers Trip?

Freshers' trip is a trip, this year to Yorkshire, to introduce all the new members to some white water and perhaps more importantly to get to know each other. It involves some simple white water paddling, socials in the evening and sleeping in a scout hut (watch out Laura snores). Fun is to be had by all.

What is National Student Rodeo (NSR)?

NSR is one of the BEST weekends on the university kayaking calendar. This is an event not to be missed. It is a ‘Freestyle’ competition but has something for all levels. Out of boat tricks and swims are more than welcome.

The best part is two nights of partying with student paddlers from across the world.

NakedHow much does it really cost?

To join it costs £88 for club membership and £15 for AU membership ( this covers you for as many clubs as you like). This covers you for all the pool and polo sessions, use of club kit and subsidised trip. Extra for trips is normally a small amount for food and fuel. HPP is £6.80 for 3 hours paddling and drivers normally ask for a small contribution to their fuel.

Can I get qualifications through the club?

Yes. The club runs 1* and 2* tests each year. It also runs coaching qualifications and higher level personal paddling awards. First aid and WWSR courses have also been organised.
